Our MOT Preparation Checklist

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an important annual check to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and meets safety and environmental standards. Preparing for an MOT can save you time, money, and the hassle of a retest. This article provides a simple, step-by-step checklist to help you get your car ready and increase its chances of passing on the first try.

Why Preparing For An MOT Is Important

Preparing for your MOT ensures that your car is in good condition before the test, reducing the likelihood of failure. Nearly two in five vehicles fail their MOT on the first attempt, often due to minor issues that could have been fixed in advance. Checking key areas such as lights, tyres, and brakes can help you avoid these common pitfalls. Proper preparation also means fewer surprises, saving you money on unnecessary repairs and retests.

The MOT Preparation Checklist

This checklist covers the most common areas checked during an MOT test. Follow these steps to get your car ready.

Lights & Indicators

Start by inspecting all the lights on your car. This includes headlights, brake lights, rear lights, indicators, and hazard lights. Turn on each light and walk around the car to ensure they all work. Don’t forget to check the number plate lights and the main beam settings on your headlights. If a bulb isn’t working, replace it before your test.

Tyres

Your tyres must meet the legal requirements to pass an MOT. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its entire circumference. You can use a tread depth gauge or the 20p test to check this. Place a 20p coin in the tread groove—if you can see the outer band of the coin, your tyres may need replacing. Also, check for visible damage such as bulges or cuts and ensure the tyre pressure matches the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Brakes

Brakes are a critical safety feature, so make sure they’re in good working order. Test the foot brake by pressing it to see if it feels firm and responsive. Check the handbrake to ensure it holds the car securely when applied. If you notice any squeaking or grinding noises when braking, have a mechanic inspect your brakes before the test.

Windscreen & Wipers

Inspect the windscreen for any cracks or chips. Damage larger than 10mm in the driver’s direct line of sight or larger than 40mm in the swept area of the windscreen can result in an MOT failure. Ensure your windscreen wipers are in good condition and replace them if the rubber is worn or torn. Don’t forget to top up the washer fluid.

Seatbelts

Check all seatbelts for damage and ensure they lock securely when latched. Pull sharply on the belt to test the locking mechanism. Seatbelts must be free from tears or fraying to pass the MOT.

Horn

Press the horn to ensure it sounds loud and clear. The horn must be loud enough to warn other road users or pedestrians.

Exhaust & Emissions

Start the engine and listen for any unusual noises from the exhaust system. Excessive smoke or loud rattling sounds can indicate problems. Ensure your car has enough fuel and oil for the emissions test, as insufficient levels can prevent the test from being completed.

Fuel & Oil

Before the test, check that your car has enough fuel and oil. Test centres need these to check emissions, and your MOT could be delayed or refused if levels are too low. Use the dipstick to check the oil level and top it up if necessary.

What To Do If Your Car Fails

If your car fails its MOT, you’ll receive a list of issues that need to be fixed. Some faults may be minor, allowing you to continue driving while repairs are completed. However, major or dangerous faults mean your car cannot be driven until repairs are made. You may be eligible for a free or discounted retest if the repairs are carried out within a certain timeframe, so check with your test centre.
