Tyres are an important part of your vehicle. They are what connects your car to the road, so it’s essential that they are taken care of. Here’s just some things to look out for if you want to keep them in good condition.
Air Pressure Checks
Maintaining the air pressure on your tyres is important. If they are underinflated or even overinflated they can be a danger to your safety and also wear very fast. You can find out what they need to be either in the handbook, on the digital dashboard or on the inside of the doors. We recommend checking the air pressure once a month to ensure they are the correct pressure.
Careful Driving
How you drive your car can impact the condition of the tyres. Driving carefully over speed bumps and potholes will help to prevent cuts or damage to the rubber. Ensuring you don’t bash the wheels against kerbs is also going to help prolong the life of the rubber. Keep an eye on your driving performance and be careful when you come into contact with obstacles.
Tread Depth
Tread depth of tyres is very important and there’s a legal requirement for them to be a minimum of 1.6mm. You can test this yourself with a 20 pence piece. All you have to do is place it in the central three-quarters of the rubber and see whether the rim of the coin is visible. If you can see it, then the tread is below the legal limit and should be replaced.
Don’t Overload Your Car
Overloading your car can weigh it down and cause more wear on your tyres. So, if you’ve got something in the boot of your vehicle that can be taken out, it will benefit the rubber and your fuel consumption!
MOTs & Servicing
For well maintained tyres, we recommend getting them assessed by the professionals frequently. This can be done during the MOT, and during full services. This will help to identify issues early and also ensure that they are performing as they should. It is here that mechanics can also look to see whether wheel alignment may be causing any issues and early wear.
